Education System in Australia

Commonwealth register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) – is a database of all the registered Australian Education Institutions. In order to be able to enroll and teach an international student Institutions in Australia must be registered by CRICOS.

Higher education courses can be taken to earn an advanced degree and continue your studies in Australia. There are three main types of higher education which lead to Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degrees. In Australia it is quite common for students to enroll in a double or combined Bachelor Degree program which leads to the award of two Bachelor Degrees. This is most common in the fields of arts, commerce, law and science.

Australian institutions have major intake in the month of February/ Early March each year. July/ August intake is also a very big intake with few courses in the specialized programs not being offered at this point of time.

Tuition fees and living expenses

International students in Australia are required to pay their tuition fees up-front. Some institutions may also charge for other student costs, in addition to tuition fees. These may include library, laboratory, or sports facility costs. Students should also consider the costs of excursions, books, and stationery, as well as any essential materials specific to their course of study, such as lab coats or photographic supplies.

  • Undergraduate Bachelor degree from an Australian university can cost anywhere from AUS $14,000 to 35,000 a year.
  • Postgraduate degree can cost from AUS $15,000 to AUS $ 36,000 a year.
  • Cost of Living: the average cost per year of study in Australia for international students AUS $18,012 (US$14,100).

Students are allowed to work 20-hours part time during their course and 40 hours during vacations. This helps them to cover most of their living expenses.

Application Process and Admission Requirements

For Bachelor’s degrees: a minimum score of 65-75% in XII. For some Top Universities these requirements can go up to 90% marks in class 12th examinations.

Diplomas: Those interested in graduate diploma programs need a minimum score of 55% in their bachelor’s degrees.

Master’s Degree: To pursue masters you would need a minimum score of 60% with relevant work experience in the same field.

English Requirement: Most Australian universities insist upon a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 for Diploma courses, 6.0 for bachelors and 6.5 for Master’s programs. Those who do not meet the English Language requirements are also permitted to take the ELICOS course, which is a pre sessional English programs which lasts for about 6-8 weeks.

The Application process generally is the same for most of the Universities however it may vary slightly from one University to other.

  • The documents required for the admissions and for the assessment are- mark sheets and passing certificates of previous studies, work experience letters (if applicable), reference letters, IELTS/TOEFL/PTE score card to assess English proficiency, ID pages of passport. Additional documents (Statement of purpose and CV) can be asked if required depending on the course you have selected.
  • With the implementation of new process under Streamlined Visa Processing a student is required to submit certain documents like Student Eligibility Checklist, Financial Declaration Form, Pre Visa assessment Form at the time of submitting the application for admission. Incorrect or incomplete checklists will not be processed by the universities and may lead to delay in processing your applications. Your counselor will provide you all the forms and will submit the same to the University for the Assessment.

Jobs and Post Study Visa

While studying in Australia, a student has the advantage of working part-time (off Campus/On Campus) in order to gain work experience as well as manage their living expenses. A student is permitted to work a maximum of 20 per week and 40 hours during vacations and Holidays.

Students also get post study work rights of 2-3 years, depending on the course undertaken. Students who are going for a Bachelor’s Degree or 2 years Master Program will get 2 years of work permit. Students who are going for a Master by Research work will get 3 years of work permit. Students who are going for a PhD courses will get 4 years of work permit. A student who opts for a Diploma course or a Masters course with duration of less than 2 years is not granted a post study job search visa.

Possibility of Immigration: In addition to providing an outstanding educational opportunity, once you have completed a registered course of 2 years study in Australia you may be eligible to apply within Australia for a Skilled Permanent Residency Visa under the Graduate Overseas Student Subclass. This will entitle you to permanent residency status thus allowing you unrestricted work rights in Australia (conditions apply).

Scholarships

Although most international students in Australia are full-fee paying students, international students may also choose to apply for a scholarship. Scholarships in Australia are offered by the Australian government, education institutions, and a variety of other organizations. They cover vocational education and training, student exchanges, and undergraduate and postgraduate study and research. Australian Government scholarships are not available for international students who are undertaking English language training specifically in Australia, but several Australian institutions offer English language training scholarships. There are many scholarships, grants, and bursaries which can help support you financially with your studies in Australia. They are offered by the Australian Government, education institutions, and a number of other public and private organizations.

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) scheme enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia, allowing them to gain experience while working with leading Australian researchers. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, as well as health cover costs for their dependents.

Students considering Australia scholarships are recommended to begin the application procedure 8-12 months prior to the intake. Scholarship deadlines vary amongst institutions.
