TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test is a universally recognised exam that tests the English Language Proficiency of non-native speakers. The TOEFL test is a common component of the application requirements for students from countries where their native language is not English. The purpose of the TOEFL is to analyse the language proficiency of the student in order to ensure that the students will not face a language barrier that will hamper their understanding of the university curriculum as the medium of instrction is English. The TOEFL also has a social factor, as a stronger grip over the language also guarantees social inclusion for the student within the university as he/she will be able to communicate freely with his/her peers.

The TOEFL test is made up of four sections – Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. Each of the sections are given equal weightage of 30 points each, making the total score of a TOEFL test amount up to 120. Generally, anything above 100 is considered a good score in the TOEFL. These sections together allow for a holistic assessment of an individual’s language proficiency. The TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test is now being replaced by the TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT), which is a more efficient way of test taking.

The TOEFL iBT takes about 3 hours, with a scheduled break in between. What’s interesting about the TOEFL test is its grading, which is completely biased and done using AI, even for the speaking section.

The TOEFL test is not only important for educational institutions, but also for professional organisations. The interpersonal nature of the test makes it easier for the test taker to feel more comfortable during the test. A TOEFL score is valid for 2 years and can be taken as many times as required. The TOEFL exam can only be taken at the official testing centres as the scores need to be processed and sent directly to the universities from the testing centre itself. It is best to view the official TOEFL website for information regarding exam dates and availability, as well as for locating official testing centres nearby.
